Being a healthcare provider for 30 years, I am noticing a fractured understanding of physiology within exercise circles and various dietary programs. Our structure goes through various anabolic (building) versus catabolic (breaking down) states during the day. This is a normal process unless you are stuck on one side or the other. What concerns me the most in my patients particularly those over 50, is their already lack of nutrient levels and detoxification capability to maintain this constant flux to stay healthy. In today's world with low quality food along with poor food choices, even younger individuals are in no better shape then their older counterparts. But individuals that are entering into a period of their lives where their glandular system is changing must be particularly careful of their nutrient levels and their choice in exercise programs. For instance men go into Andropause and women Menopause. Most are entering into these changes in a weak glandular state and a brain that is aging and often toxic. What doe this mean? Ovaries in women and testicles in men will secrete less of these androgens as they age. So what happens is the adrenal glands begin to take up the slack to produce some of these hormones. Now the Adrenal glands are responsible for many functions, from steroid and catecholamine production to precursors for our androgens, testosterone, estrogens, progesterone etc. The reasons for such quick changes in body fat composition, mood changes, insomnia, depression, memory loss is that the adrenal system is already worn out and the hippocampus in the brain that governs the ever important cortisol circadian rhythm has aged as well for various reasons, but especially high toxic loads of chemicals and heavy metals infections (high levels of Herpes simplex 1-6 and 7 is being found in the brain with very possible implications in Alzheimers). So choosing a exercise program for this age group should focus on LIGHT cardiovascular movements, some weight training to stimulate bone reconstruction especially in osteopenic/osteoporitic individuals (men lose bone as well as their testosterone drops) and exercise movements that support glandular STRENGTH (parasympathetic). Taiji, yoga stretching and especially balance techinques such as Feldenkrais. And lastly PROPER supplementation with gentle detoxification agents to support rebuilding of tissue structures, support for MTHFR genotypes (40-60% of population), brain, heart and bone. I hope that this article stimulates some thoughts for healthcare providers and the Hydrex team can help guide you.

How does exercise transmit to healthier brain function? It is already known in neurological circles (at least hopefully so) that movement creates a healthier brain. Lets review how that occurs. We do know that in order for the brain to survive it needs three components:oxygen which comes from healthy blood perfusion, glucose and stimulation. With all the personal trainers and exercise physiologists and enthusiasts out there, lets talk about stimulation. Neurons need stimulation because that is what promotes production of proteins within neurons. Without getting to biochemical, these proteins create a healthy environment for neuronal function. Their production is DEPENDENT UPON STIMULATION and proper mitochondrial function . When there is not enough stimulation, neurons become unhealthy because of the loss of intracellular proteins. Less proteins means less ATP production (think energy) and less internal negativity in the neuron (lower internal negativity leads to a closer threshold of that neuron that excites to quickly without the ability to meet demands that are asked of it). So stimulation is an important aspect of neuronal brain health (along with healthy neurotransmitter support). So what type of stimulation is best for the brain? Anatomy and physiology 101 talks about the muscular system and their component parts e.g. the muscle spindles. The muscle spindles need to be activated by GRAVITY . When these spindles are activated through movement against gravity, the fastest nervous system fibers get the brain to windup its own neuronal pools. It's an amazing array of sensory and motor nerve endings within the spindle with a back and forth conversation to the brain triggering numerous responses (too long to explain here) which triggers different areas of the brain and the brain then sets the tone of the spindles. This back and forth croostalk creates one huge pool of neuronal stimulation.

With all this going on in milliseconds, we need to understand how important exercise of all kinds can be helpful in keeping our brain healthy. And we don't have to kill ourselves with extreme exercise, just move daily, sit less, Take daily walks. Yoga, Taiji are all helpful. SO STAY HEALTHY AND MOVE! Your brain will thank you for it.

There is no longer any question that environmental pollution and toxins (including heavy metals) have the potential to cause mild to severe reactions and impact on brain development. These toxic loads cause inflammatory and autoimmune responses and brain degeneration. One only need to look at Flint Michigan to see the lack of deveolpment in children exposed to lead. Just imagine besides lead other dangerous environmental compounds were also in the human organism. We are now exposed to counless chemicals, hybridized foods, genetically modified foods that are all immune activating. We are stressing our immune system never before seen or have encountered in our lifetimes. And our children and teens are paying the price. These combinations of toxins and chronic exposure are leading to the chronic ailments that clinicians see daily. Add the SAD diet on top of this and the internal destructive force plays out in inflammatory ailments that the medical model has no idea how to treat. The increased use of multiple pharmaceuticals is shockingly high (one third of the population is on some type of medication and multiple medications) and are having an affect beyond how adverse reactions can be calculated. Many are beginning to wake up and theorize that all these combinations are contributing to the growing autoimmunity, autism and neurodegeneration we are seeing. I see this daily. One individuals mother was on 17 medications which was causing her symptoms. Only a minority of chemical compounds have been tested for safety. They are tested oddly enough in dose dependent levels until a
response is seen and that level is considered toxic, ignoring that low levels below this threshold can cause severe immune reactions over long term exposure. The EPA does not require testing on chemicals that come to market unless evidence of harm exists. EPA approves 90% of NEW chemicals (what about the ones already approved) and only one quarter of more than 80,000 have been tested for toxicity. So our children are being born with theses high levels of chemical burdens. Is it no wonder that cancer rates are soaring along with multiple learning and behavioral disabilities. These are some basics of which future articles will address. But we must start to understand that as caregivers we must treat as carefully and thoughtfully as we can realizing these chemical and toxic burdens must be detoxed safely.

The most important process that keeps disease at bay is detoxification. The medical community and the medical model does not understand the chemistry behind detoxification, the toxic loads our body needs to process and how to detox safely. Over 500,000 galbladder surgeries are performed yearly. In my practice a patient mentioned that a 11 year old recently had his gallbladder removed. The numbers are staggering. So what is detoxification? Simply detoxification refers to a broad spectrum of bodily processes that helps maintain the health of the organism when exposed to harmful substances from internal and external sources . The processing of food alone takes a lot of energy to perform and certain elements need to be present especially for specific genotypes that have a problem with this process. How does this occur? The gut and liver are the main processes of breaking down harmful toxins to inert substances to be eliminated via the bowel. The kidneys also have certain pathways for elimination but are truly an endocrine organ as well. As mentioned, specific elements(especially certain B complexes for MTHFR genotypes) need to be present for proper detoxification to occur. The phases of the liver must work perfectly to break down toxins to a nonharmful form so they can be eliminated. Besides my detox program Hydrex, MineralXand Zeotox , there are certain foods that can be very helpful to ease the stress on the liver and gut which I will speak about in future articles and podcasts. There are dangerous chemicals in our air, food and water that now mimic certain cancer causing estrogens
called XENOESTROGENS . Bpa (BISPHENOL A) from plastic pollution is a perfect example, there are many more. These must be eliminated to keep serious disease at bay. Heavy metal toxicity is now rampant in our food chain, air and water. Flint Michigan's lead problem is the tip of the iceberg to which we are exposed. The liver and gut must have proper elements and binders to bind theses toxic elements so they don't settle in organ, fat tissue, bone and brain. Healthy food and detox formulas are needed to properly transform toxins in our body. Stay tuned for future science based articles on health related issues.

One of many reasons I will be writing about concerning the need for detoxification. Plastic is produced by Polymers containing the dangerous chemical BPA (bisphenols A). Lets look at some statistics. Studies now suggest BPA disrupts our reproductive systems, changing sperm quality and increasing the risk of breast and prostate cancers. According to Nancy Wayne, a reproductive neuroendocrinologist at UCLA , acidic foods such as tomato sauce can break down plastic. Plastic breaks down when heated. Manufacturers heat metal cans lined with BPA to sterilize them. Another reason to stay away from prepackaged food and don't ever microwave your food. This hormonal interference by BPA has been linked to heart disease and obesity . "We know that the vast majority of Americans (95% according to one study) have detectable levels of BPA in their blood and urine". Nonetheless the FDA's official current position is that the amount of BPA consumers encounter in packaging is safe. DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT! Several states have already partially banned BPA. And small doses over long periods of time is more detrimental than one large dose one or two times. BPA free is not necessarily good since those plastics are using polymers that have not been tested called BPS .

So what can we do? Avoid canned food, plastic containers especially water in plastic containers. Use glass and get a quality water filter for you home make sure the filters have the ability to filter out chemical compounds and filter size is less than 3 microns to eliminate parasites. Or purchase water in glass
bottles only. Do not use your microwave with anything plastic. I don't use it at all but prepackaged food is unhealthy for many reasons but also microwaved is even more toxic. REMEMBER, CHILDREN ARE EXTREMELY SUSCEPTIBLE TO THESE TOXINS BECAUSE OF THEIR LOW BODY FAT COMPOSITION AND WEIGHT!

Stop Pollution in its Tracks!
We have the solution to plastic pollution.

Americans throw away 25 million plastic bottles every hour, with 35 billion going to landfills every year. Contrary to popular belief, only 9 percent of total plastic waste generated in 2012 was recovered for recycling.
Plastic waste is contaminated by materials such as ink and paper, which makes recycling difficult. As a result, most of it ends up in landfills to pollute land and water supplies.

Here are the facts:
Plastic bottles take 450 years to decompose.
There are an estimated 100 million tons of plastic debris floating in the oceans.
24 million gallons of oil is used to produce one billion bottles.

BPA (bisphenol a) is a compound in plastic first found in 1891. This is the chemical building block of plastic from polycarbonate to polyester. In the U.S. alone, more than 2.3 billion pounds (1.04 metric tons) is made annually. In fact, BPA is one of the highest volume chemicals produced worldwide. Over 6 billion pounds are produced each year and over 100 tons released into the atmosphere by yearly production.

Studies:
In addition to BPA’s estrogenic cancer causing activity, it has been found to affect thyroid function. Japanese mice and monkey studies exposed the animals to 100 mg/kg during pregnancy. BPA was detected in several fetal tissues including serum, brain, liver and testes.

Endocrine News
Volume 30 Bisphenol A and the Great Divide

Since 1936 it is known that BPA mimics estrogens (xenoestrogens which are fake estrogens), which bind to the same cell receptors in the human body as natural female hormones. Tests show these xenoestrogens cause human breast cancer growth and decreased sperm counts. The U.S. CDC found traces of BPA in nearly all urine samples collected in 2004.
When plastic containers are exposed to high temperatures such as microwaves, this toxin leaches out 55 times faster than in normal conditions.

Even though BPA’s are a known carcinogenic toxin, the FDA approved it for use in baby bottles. Animal studies prove BPA causes permanent effects after very short exposure. BPA is linked to breast and prostate cancer, the most prolific forms of cancer.

The Myths of Recycling

Recycling is the most common method of plastic reuse but does nothing for pollution prevention. Less than one percent of all plastics products are recycled in the U.S.

Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic beverage bottles every hour! Americans send about 38 billion water bottles a year to landfills. Considering more than 24 million gallons of oil-enough to fuel 30,000 cars for a year-are required to produce just one billion bottles, the environmental impact of plastic bottle waste is staggering. Plastics are now under much scrutiny for their potential health risks due to BPA (bisphenol A) a cancer carcinogen.

How many plastic bottles are thrown away each year?

35 billion!  Of the plastic produced in the united states only about 25 percent is recycled.

32 million tons of plastic waste were generated in 2012, representing 12.7 percent of total msw.

in 2012, the U.S. generated almost 14 million tons of plastics as containers and packaging.

Only 9 % of the total plastic waste generated in 2012 was recovered for recycling.

In 2012, the category of plastics which includes bags, sacks and wraps was recycled at about 12 percent.

Contrary to the beliefs held by most, relatively little plastic is recycled because there are various types of plastic with different chemical compositions, and recycled plastics can be contaminated by mixing of types which makes the process of recycling this material even more difficult and elusive. So, what happens to all those containers that are not recycled (which consumes energy to produce and energy to recycle), they wind up in landfills, rivers and oceans and when they breakdown in the environment, these chemicals that make up the plastic containers pollutes our aquifers, rivers, oceans. These dangerous broken down chemicals wind up in the food chain which other animals and humans consume. These elements even in very low doses BPA contaminants  are carcinogenic and research is showing polycarbonate substitutes may not be much better.

It’s estimated that there are 100 million tons of plastic debris floating around in the oceans threatening the health and safety of marine life.

Plastic waste is also contaminated by materials such as paper and ink. Separating from non-plastics in the recycling process, and different types of plastic from each other is labor intensive and so far there is no easy solution.

Plastic is made from petroleum or natural gas in a chemical process that combines smaller molecules into a large chainlike molecule, often with other substances added to give it particular qualities. Plastic production is estimated to use 8 % of yearly oil production.   Because plastics embody energy from fossil fuels, leaving so much of it in landfills is not only an environmental hazard, it’s a huge waste of energy that can be used for more important matters.

Some components like phthalates and bisphenol A, can and do have harmful effects. In 1991, 21 scientists gathered to discuss evidence of developmental alterations observed in wildlife populations due to theses chemical exposures. Over a decade later the science is clear, these chemical compounds alter gene expression, even epigenetically (epigenetics shows that future generations not even directly exposed to a chemical can be affected) effect present and future generations.

                                                            MORE BAD NEWS!

BPA’s in plastic bottles mimics estrogens affecting normal estrogen function. BPA is a cancer causing element promoting the growth of breast cancer and decreasing sperm counts in males. The U.S.-CDC found traces of BPA in nearly all urine samples collected in 2004. That is a decade ago, who knows what those counts are now. Glucuronide a byproduct of the breakdown of BPA is found in the body with even low levels of exposure to the chemical (american chemistry council). BPA leaks out from plastic containers especially under high temperatures. CDC data shows 93 percent of 2,157 people tested between the ages of 6-85 had detectable levels of BPA in their urine. Children had higher levels then teens and teens higher levels then adults, a frightening scenario.

The FDA and our own EPA has approved BPA ‘s use but a team of government scientists recently found BPA levels found in humans exceeds safety levels. BPA is linked to breast cancer and prostate cancer-newbold et al.

Altered menstrual cycles and diabetes in mice and impaired fertility has been linked to BPA exposure.

Fred Von Saal, reproductive biologist for the university of Missouri found children six years of age had higher levels of glucuronide in their urine then did mice dosed with the chemical that later developed cancer.

                                                            MORE DANGERS FOR CHILDREN?

Two studies estimate BPA exposure levels in young children at home and in day cares. BPA was detected in indoor and outdoor samples in floor dust, play area soil, liquid and solid foods. BPA levels estimated at 42.98 ng/ml was way above safe levels presumed by the EPA of 1 ug/kg bw (body weight).

Another study of 257 preschool verified BPA found in more than 50% of indoor air. Does BPA leak into the air from plastic containers and bottles? A question to be answered. There are other forms of polycarbonates which are being investigated now such as BPE’s for even worse toxicity than the former BPA.
